A probate file contains the legal documentation required for granting of probate on a will so that the person's estate can be administered.
This Album shows his will, the letters to his wife Jessie and his War Diary and the Court documents seeking the grant of probate (affidavits, motion and grant of probate). Jessie is seeking to have probate granted given that Alexander has been declared by a Court of Enquiry to be missing believed killed on 12 October, 1917 at Passchendaele. The Diary and Letters are proof of their relationship and that Alexander has died. The Letters and his War Diary, which are part of the probate file are in separate Albums.
The Diary documents his voyage, from New Zealand to England, on the Troopship 'Devon', from 5 April 1917 to 24 June 1917 and there two entries for: 28 September 1917 and 10 October 1917; the days he went 'into the firing line'.
The Letters were written to Jessie from the Front and describe his training, the conditions in the trenches, war progress, his daily activities, etc. He longs to be with her and return home because she is expecting their first child.
The digital images have been enhanced to increase contrast, so that they are readable.
