The arrival of the Strathallan - An exhibition presented in collaboration with South Canterbury Museum

This gallery contains images and correspondence relating to the Strathallan, the first immigrant ship to arrive in Timaru, January 1859.

The images have been supplied by the South Canterbury Museum. South Canterbury Museum is holding an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Strathallan in Timaru, and the publishing of Alan McKenzie's book "Timaru at Last! South Canterbury’s Strathallan Immigrants". Their exhibition runs until 3 May 2009.

The correspondence, taken from our nineteenth century public archives, gives insight into the organisation and concerns surrounding the arrival of the Strathallan and Timaru's settlement. It is written by the Resident Magistrate of Timaru, Timaru settlers, the Canterbury Provincial Secretary, and Canterbury Provincial Government agents of Emigration, Immigration, and Customs.
